Many of us have a holiday booked with Loveholidays for the next few months. With the uncertainty around Covid-19, what rules apply? Can you cancel? Who refunds you? What are your options?
Bookings made with Loveholidays are one of the booking companies whose ‘need to knows’ are covered in our booking flights and hotels separately guide. Most of the email questions we are getting are from Loveholidays customers so this is a COVID special guide and also applies to all other booking sites like Expedia etc
What is a cancelled flight, you’ll be suprised? Read our how to get a refund for a cancelled flight article.
Did you book a holiday consisting of flight and hotel with Loveholidays ?
If your holiday is made up of a flight and hotel then this applies to you. If you just booked a flight, or just accommodation, or even a flight one day and added the hotel the next day then this does not apply.
If you booked flight only or hotel only.
Flight only bookings are ATOL protected and you are entitled to a full refund from Loveholidays if your flight is cancelled.
Accommodation only bookings. If these are non-refundable bookings then the non-refundable means that if YOU cancel then you are not entitled to a refund.
If Loveholidays cancel the accommodation then you are entitled to a refund. If the accommodation is not open for you to complete your holiday, this means that your booking must be cancelled by Loveholidays, and is considered cancelled, therefore a refund is due. The details regarding your refund are as for holidays below.
When am I entitled to a refund for my holiday?
- You are entitled to a refund when your holiday is cancelled by Loveholidays
- You are not entitled to a refund if you cancel your holiday yourself. So you need to wait until they cancel.
The Airline has cancelled my flight but Loveholidays have not cancelled my booking.
This is a common problem. You know the fight is cancelled by Ryanair or whoever but Loveholidays have not cancelled actually your holiday yet.
Until they cancel your holiday there is nothing you can do, except wait. Save yourself some stress, you are not going to get any answers by chasing them. You’ll just end up wasting hours trying to get through on the phone, or on twitter – frustrating and pointless.
Accept that you will hear a week or so before you are due to go.
Why don’t they just cancel the booking and give refunds?
The whole travel industry is collapsing, cashflow is non existent and all travel companies are trying to protect their businesses by keeping hold of the money they have, whilst having no income from new bookings for the foreseeable future.
They know the holidays are not going ahead but are not officially cancelling them until the last possible moment.
As soon as they cancel – the 14 days refund law is in force.

I have been told I need to rebook or accept vouchers.
- Travel Companies are entitled to offer alternatives such as vouchers, to customers of cancelled bookings.
- THEY MUST ALSO OFFER THE OPTION OF A CASH REFUND WITHIN 14 DAYS. This is the law.
Customers of Loveholidays have been told they can only rebook, accept a credit note or claim a refund in four months’ time.
They say they are acting within ABTAs guidelines. Which is true.
ABTA (The Association of British Travel Agents) are rightly concerned about the future of the travel industry and its members. They have advised its members to offer vouchers and alternatives wherever possible and they are pressing the Government to change the law and allow their members not to have to offer cash refunds.
The law still stands that a cash refund must be offered, and paid, within 14 days. This may change soon. But for now, you are entitled to a full refund from Loveholidays within 14 days.
Loveholidays are saying they need to wait for the Airline to refund them.
This is incorrect. You have booked through Loveholidays. Loveholidays must refund you.
They may be waiting for refunds from Airlines themselves but that is irrelevant.
You are entitled to a refund in full from Loveholidays within 14 days.
I can’t get through to Loveholidays to find out what is happening.
This is the same with many holiday Companies and it is a matter of keep trying however if you paid by credit card (even part of the amount) then just contact your card issuer and request a S75 refund. They will refund you if
- If your holiday date has passed – so was clearly cancelled.
- You have confirmation that your upcoming holiday is cancelled.
The credit card company will refund you with the note ‘ If the merchant does send us documentation to support the charge at a later date, we may reverse the credit on your account.’
So only do this is you have evidence that the holiday / flight is cancelled.
But Loveholidays still won’t offer a refund.
Some Companies are offering refunds when pushed, but the refunds are taking much longer than the allowed 14 days. We have been waiting for a refund from Virgin for our New York trip for over 2 months – they say allow 90 days! (Update did a S75 with Amex – Amex refunded in us in 3 days)
Loveholidays are not even offering refunds, it seems. There is no way to apply online and if you do manage to get through on the phone then you get fobbed off and cut off.
We understand the financial toll this is having on the industry and can only imagine the millions of refunds and changes that need to be processed. Many companies will not survive. By treating customers in this way means that even if they do survive, who would book with them again? Those vouchers will be worthless.
We have a holiday booked with Virgin Atlantic to Las Vegas in 5 weeks. Obviously that’s not going to happen but it has not been cancelled by Virgin yet so no refund is triggered. They offered us a rebook with no change fee but the exact same holiday next year is £2000 more and we have to pay the difference. Yes we would love to help out and rebook but for £2k more? No. We want our £3k refunded.

So how do I get a refund for my cancelled holiday?
There are options if you really can’t get anywhere. The law may be on your side but the reality of this unprecedented situation means you can insist all you like but it may not help. You can try the following.
- If you booked on credit card. Contact your card issuer and ask for a refund under Section 75 (S75) This is usually done pretty quickly though it’s taking weeks instead of days at the moment due to the sheer volume.
- Contact your travel Insurer. They will refund, less the excess if you have the correct cover. Most insurances taken out before March will cover you for the COVID cancellation. They will not refund you if you can get refunded elsewhere (eg from Credit card)
I have paid a deposit and the balance is due, do I pay it?
If your holiday has been cancelled – and this includes the situation where the flight has definitely and undoubtedly been cancelled but you have not yet been ‘officially’ advised. Then this is what you can do.
Email the Company and include the following
Booking ref………
As my holiday has been cancelled by Loveholidays (or whoever you booked with), I am now, like many others, due a full refund.
Obviously means that the balance which was due on (insert date) is not now payable.
We appreciate you are very busy so it is understandable that Loveholidays have not contacted me yet to confirm this, or respond to my emails, or on twitter, or been able to answer the phone as you are dealing with imminent holiday issues.
Please confirm cancellation as soon as possible and advise of timescales for the refund of the deposit paid, which legally should be within 14 days.
Please also confirm that the balance will not be taken. This is not due and not authorised.
Looking forward to your quick response.
Then. Give it a week and contact your card issuer and request a S75 refund, or a chargeback if paid by debit card. Full info in our how to get a refund for your cancelled holiday guide here.
If your holiday has not been cancelled yet, what do you do?
This is a difficult choice. If your holiday has officially not been cancelled by Loveholidays. It’s a catch 22 situation that is nonsense.
The rules – which many companies are sticking to – state that if you do not pay the balance then you forfeit your deposit.
You (and they ) know that you will not be going on the holiday.
If they cancel it now they have to refund your deposit. They do not want to do this (or actually cannot in some cases) so they won’t cancel until the last minute.
If you do not pay the balance, that counts as you cancelling the holiday so you will forfeit the deposit.
If you pay the balance you will have to wait until they cancel and go through the whole energy draining drama of trying to get a refund. I suggest the following steps.
- Call your credit card issuer and ask if they will refund your deposit, or if not, if they will refund the whole balance when it is cancelled. Some card issuers have been brilliant with this – refunding just the deposit. Most have at least confirmed that if you pay the balance, you will be refunded within weeks when cancelled.
- Call your Insurer. Same as above, some have been happy to refund the deposit less the excess. Not ideal but it gives you peace of mind for a relatively small cost.
What if I didn’t pay the deposit by card, and don’t have insurance?
- Pay the balance on a credit card – you will be eventually refunded ALL the cost, including the deposit
- Contact Loveholidays (somehow) and ask them for a voucher for the deposit. Unlikely from Loveholidays but worth a try. Other travel companies are doing this.
- Write off the deposit and chalk it up to experience.

What happens if my holiday is not cancelled but I don’t want to go?
It is pretty certain that May and June holidays will be cancelled but after that who knows? There are also instances where companies are not cancelling holidays if the flights are going ahead and the hotels are open- even if you can’t go. Sneaky and mean and will not be forgotten. This could leave you in a situation where you pay your balance and have to cancel the holiday yourself.
Can I claim on my holiday insurance if I decide to cancel?
This is where you will have to contact your insurer as terms and conditions vary. Have a read of our guides which cover travel insurance inclusions and cancellation info. However the only reasons you would be covered are;
- Safety. The Foreign Office advises against travel to the Country
- Money. You are now unemployed from a job you have been in for over 12 months.
- Family / Health. You would be covered if you or a close family member is ill with a non pre-existing condition.
Also if you had COVID symptoms just before you were meant to travel, you could get a Medical certificate without going to the Doctors, and that would allow you to claim on your travel insurance.
Anyway, good luck, any questions, stick them in the comments below and then the answers will be there for all to see. Remember that you will get your money back, it will just take a while. Be patient.
They have taken the balance even though the holiday is cancelled.
Unfortunately this is happening alot too. If you cant get through to them then how was the payment made
- Credit card – Get in tough with your issuer urgently. Tell them the payment was taken without permission. They will refund
- Debit card – As above, contact your bank
- By Direct Debit – Contact your bank, they will refund immediately under the direct debit guarantee

Fantastic article by Tracy.I,like many others was due to pay final balance on an upcoming holiday, even though flights had been cancelled and was obvious the package was not taking place.Sent the email as advised and within a few days, received response. Some days later, booking has been cancelled and now eligible for deposit refund.Thank you Tracy!
Very informative article I can see I will be referring back to this in the coming weeks. Thank you
I have paid for a hotel booking in Honolulu via Love Holidays and have been unable to contact them to cancel.
The hotel has advised that they are happy to fully refund my monies but, as payment was made to a 3rd party (Love Holidays) the refund process needed to be completed by them.
Unfortunately there is no way to contact Love Holidays as the their live chat system they use for communication is not available. What should I do
Hi Gemma
You can try a Twitter message. They reply eventually and your request will be lodged. Do not say you want to cancel. Say that you have been in contact with the hotel and they have confirmed that they are happy to cancel and to fully refund monies but, as payment was made to a 3rd party (Love Holidays) the refund process needed to be completed by them. Ask them to process refund. Let me know how you get on. Tracy
Hi Tracey! Brilliant article we booked a package holiday with love holiday to Turkey we are meant to be going Thursday 23rd July I contacted the hotel and they have said sadly they will not be opening until the 14th August. Flights seem to still be going ahead but we will have nowhere to stay. I have tried every form of contact ie Twitter Instagram live chat and had absolutely no communication from them. We really don’t know what to do?? Do you think it means they are trying to find us an alternative or is it gong to be cancelled? Do we take the flight and hope for the best?
Hi Amy, this is a nightmare many are facing. If your hotel is cancelled and they have not offered you an alternative (which you don’t have to accept) your holiday is effectively cancelled. BUT you cant get hold of them to confirm this. Martin Lewis has just done a LoveHolidays special, I have just added this link to the article. Good luck and let us know if you get anywhere, there’s many readers looking for news / hope / info. All the best, Tracy
Where is the Martin lewis link
Hi, we had a holiday booked with Love Holidays for the 27th June, they emailed on the 15th to say the holiday was cancelled. Our flight still went ahead. Love Holidays have said we need to get a refund directly with Ryan Air, who are refusing as the flight was not cancelled. Love Holidays have now basically said its not their problem? Any advice would be appreciated.
Hi, I am in the same position as you but our flight was with easyJet. Love holidays cancelled the whole package but easy jet are refusing to refund as the flight was never actually cancelled. Have you had any luck x
I’m in the same boat. Advice would be great too.
Me also. My ATOL certificate states ‘Package (Multi-contract) sale’ but unclear if that absolves Love Holiday or not as they changed a major part of the holiday by cancelling our accommodation.
I can’t seem to get a straight answer of who is responsible in this scenario? Love Holidays stating that it’s Ryanair’s responsibility regardless of the fact they cancelled the hotel. Ryanair stating that they wont refund us as the flight went ahead irrespective of FCO advice against non-essential travel? Credit Card company unwilling to progress as flight went ahead and travel insurance claiming that they wont refund us as a refund should come from one of the above! Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Catherine, LoveHolidays – They cancelled the Hotel thus effectively cancelling the Package Holiday. So you need to keep on at them and insist that this is the case. If you had a flight only with Ryanair then depending on where the flight was for – Travel insurance would cover you. Keep Ryanair out of this, that’s a red herring and irrelevant in this Package holiday situation.
You booked a package holiday which cannot go ahead as the hotel is cancelled. LoveHolidays have not offered you an acceptable alternative so your holiday is cancelled and you are entitled to a full refund.
Be very clear that your ATOL protected packaging holiday has been cancelled by LoveHolidays. LoveHolidays are responsible for refunding you – you paid LoveHolidays.
Initially you need to persue Loveholidays for the refund. Stating the above. Give them 14 days to respond to your refund request- then you can go to your bank with the same request- your holiday has been cancelled by LoveHolidays, (you will need to provide evidence that the holiday was cancelled – which would be the proof that the hotel part was cancelled and your request above) saying that you have not received the refund you are entitled to so are requested a S75 refund.
Good luck and keep me posted.
I have booked with love holidays and was due to fly out on 10/08/20 but love holidays cancelled the booking but my flight still went ahead. I booked this as a package deal but they say they acted as my agent with Ryanair. I have lost £800 in flights. I have spoke to love holidays and twice they told me my flight was cancelled and I would eventually get a refund. I asked them to 100% confirm my flight was cancelled and that I would get a refund which they did. I have a copy of all transcript from live chat. They keep telling me now to request a refund from Ryanair which I can’t because the flight was not cancelled. Where do I stand. My hotel accommodation and transfers were cancelled by love holidays.
My Daughter and her Fiancé is due to go to Mexico on the 31st August (Package booked with Loveholidays last year). Her holiday has not been cancelled yet however, her flight is with American Airlines and has a connection in Miami. American Airlines have advised that the flight is scheduled to go ahead but as UK citizens are not permitted into the US because of the presidents proclamation which includes transiting through a US airport they will not be legally able to board. What are her rights in terms of a refund. The airline is only offering a voucher and says there is nothing they can do
Hi Claire
If it was booked as a package then yo have the protection. They cannot fob you off with a voucher. Keep insisting on a refund – that is what you are entiteled to by law. Keep us posted, good luck Tx
We have exactly this scenario. Our hotel in Mexico is closed until November, we booked Dec 2019 and the flight with American Airlines stops in Miami. Would be interested to hear how you get on! We’re due to fly on 17th October so have a little longer to fight.
I booked a package holiday with loveholiday. The flights are with British airway & are cancelled on their manage my booking but I’ve not been contacted by them yet. I’ve been trying to contact loveholiday via live chat but they’re not responding. What are my rights? Am I entiled to a refund & what’s the best way of going about this? thanks in advance
Hi Ann Marie
Keep on at them. You are entitled to a full refund if you booked flights and hotel together as a package, don’t be fobbed off. Try 0203 870 6838 – there has been some success on that number recently. Keep us posted and good luck, Tracy x
We booked a package holiday with Loveholidays in October 2019 to depart on 1 September 2020. In July 2020 our flights were cancelled by the airline and as we could not get hold of Loveholidays we found and booked our own flights with another airline to ensure our holiday was able to still go ahead. We fully notified Loveholidays on their online booking record of the flight cancellation and the full details of our new flights, which they acknowledged, we understood that we would no longer be ATOL protected but did not want to miss our holiday. About 3 weeks before we were due to fly Loveholidays cancelled our holiday so we no longer had the accommodation they had booked for us. After spending 3 hours from being 295 in the queue on their online assistant I was told they had cancelled the holiday as the original flight had been cancelled, they did not seem to acknowledge that they had been told and had a record of the new flights we had booked. They had absolutely no justification to cancel our holiday whatsoever and should compensate us for their negligance. We are still waiting for them to refund our full deposit but we have incurred other costs with the non refundable flights we had booked that we should be compensated for.
My husband and I booked and fully paid (by debit card) a holiday with Love holidays back in February, we’re due to go on 15th Sept, but Easy Jet have cancelled the flight. Love holidays said they would email us with an alternative flight (still waiting). The FCO has advised only essential travel to Spain, which would void our insurance. Love holidays have not cancelled the holiday, where do we stand?
Hi Andrea
By cancelling the flight, LoveHolidays have effectively cancelled your Package holiday. Even if they offered you an alternative, you do not have to accept.
Similar advice to my reply to Catherine –
LoveHolidays – They cancelled the Flight effectively cancelling the Package Holiday. So you need to keep on at them and insist that this is the case.
You booked a package holiday which cannot go ahead as the flight is cancelled.
Give them 14 days to respond to your refund request- then you can go to your bank / card issuer with the same request- your holiday has been cancelled by LoveHolidays, (you will need to provide evidence that the holiday was cancelled – which would be the proof that the hotel part was cancelled and your request above) saying that you have not received the refund you are entitled to so are requested a S75 refund.
Good luck and keep me posted.
Booked with love holiday a flight and hotel together for 15/7 /20 and still awaiting refund from flights ( British airways ) but love holidays is saying our money is with the service provider and they are still waiting for the refund from them before they can refund us!!! As we booked through love holidays I assume our contract was with them not a service provider!! But I have been live chatting with them about once a week and today also. Paid by debit card is it worth going through bank???
Hi Tracy, they’ll be talking about airline or hotel. But that’s irrelevant to your refund entitlement- LoveHolidays are responsible for refunding you within the timescales whether they have their refund or not.
Yes try your card issuer – saying LoveHolidays have not refunded as they should therefore the card issuer is responsible for refunding you. Good luck and keep me posted, Tracy
We booked a package holiday through loveholidays back in February to Spain For 16th September. We emailed our hotel when hearing people were arriving and their hotel was shut and sure enough we had a reply saying the hotel was shut until next year. Loveholidays were not aware of this! We went though manage my booking and changed the hotel. Then the FCO advises against travel to Spain and introduced quarantine. We waited until 10 days before we were due to fly and heard nothing so we changed destination to Crete and had to pay the maximum £90 each for flight changes with Ryanair. Then 2 days later the FCO advises against travel to Crete and imposed 2 weeks quarantine! Then the next day loveholidays cancelled the holiday. They will repay us the hotel and transfers but told us to go the Ryanair for flight refunds but as the flights are still scheduled they will not refund us. Who is responsible for flight refunds including the change flights charges and can we use our insurance. Would really really appreciate a reply
Hi Jenny, sounds like you are having a nightmare!
The important part here is LoveHolidays cancelled your holiday. Therefore LoveHolidays are responsible for refunding you.
You booked the package holiday with LoveHolidays so you have to keep insisting they refund you, as they are legally obliged to.
This is the same situation as the replies to the previous comments, so contact LoveHolidays again first, then your card issuer.
Good luck and keep me posted
Tracy
Hi Tracy,
we booked a holiday with Love Holidays for August which the flights for the holiday were cancelled by the flight Providor ( Lufthansa) , we have had the refund for the hotel but are still waiting for the flight refund .
There seems to be no way of contacting love holidays to ask what is going on with flight refunds .
Hi Shayne, if you can’t get through via phone, chat or twitter, try email or an old fashioned letter – send it recorded delivery and keep a copy. People are managing to contact them but it seems more luck than anything else.
So we have booked for May 2021 .. booked a package via loveholiday … flights have come up cancelled … payment is due in a few days …what do I do? pay or say it’s clear from all the comments … it’s a package and it will be cancelled? Do I send the email with the template Iv seen on here or go straight to the bank to stop payments … so confused 🤷🏻♀️
Hi Maryanne. Contact LH first saying as flight has been cancelled the holiday is therefore cancelled by LH. Say obviously the balance is not due and request refund of your deposit. Good luck, keep us posted, Tracy
Hi, we booked a holiday to Canaries with love holidays. The night before we were due to fly the FCO changed the travel advice so love holidays sent us a text saying we must reply – do you intend on travelling yes or no.. it said if we didn’t answer they would assume we are still travelling. We didn’t go, LH refunded our hotel but said Ryan Air had to be contacted for a flight refund. That flight still went ahead so they won’t issue a refund. LH point blank refuse to issue a refund for the flights and to make it worse they have now left ABTA. I have seen that ABTA have said even though they now cannot help as LH have withdrawn from them, as we booked when they were a member we are still entitled to the same rights.
Hi Sophie
Exactly, LH refunded your hotel so that alone is evidence that your package holiday was cancelled by them. They are required to refund your flights too. You give them one last opportunity to refund you then go to your card issuer. Good luck and keep us posted. T
Hi I booked a holiday through Love Holiday was meant to fly out end of July 2020, my flights got cancelled they called me one day before my flight and confirmed it was all cancelled due to flights and covid. They said I would be refunded in full but haven’t received a single penny or any correspondence and what’s most frustrating is that I can’t get through to LH at all.
Just to add they are no longer a member of ABTA as I tried to go down that line thanks.
I’m a pensioner and booked and paid in FULL In August 2021 through love holidays for Fuengirolla in May 2022 Wizz Air sent email to me that the flights we’re cancelled early this month and the refund was paid back to love holidays as the booking was made through them for hotel&flights, and the luggage I purchased was refunded back on to my credit card,
Why haven’t LH issued me a refund for the flights they said Love holidays there looking for alternative flight dates ?
But when I put this information on my booking it came up with no alternative date’s available.
So they are telling me now that it’s being dealt with the flight booking team bit confused on what to do next have to say this has taken a toll on my health I worry that I’m going to loose my money which took me 2years to save.how they can treat elderly customers this way is beyond me.Hopefully someone might advise me on what to do next
Sorry to hear this Susan. Did you pay by credit card? If so you can contact them and get your money back that way.
Email LoveHolidays saying that as the flights have been cancelled and refunded to LH by WhizzAir. You are legally entitled to a full refund of your holiday within 14 days. Do email me ( via the contact us button) if you need help with this. I know it is very stressful and frustrating but you will not lose your money. All the best, Tracy
