Why are Cyprus beaches charging you to wash your feet?

You’ve just spent a glorious day on a Cyprus beach. Sun kissed, sand between your toes, ice-cold drink in hand. Bliss, right? But then… as you walk off the beach back to your car or hotel you realise: your feet are coated in sticky sand, but the foot wash now has a little sign that says “Foot wash €1”. Wait, what? They’re charging to rinse your feet now?

Yes, friends. Some Cyprus beaches — including Fig Tree Bay — have recently introduced a small fee to rinse your feet after a day in the sand. Before you roll your eyes, let me explain why this happens, how it works, and how you can enjoy the beach without paying a cent.

Why some Cyprus beaches charge for foot washes?

We’ve all been there, waiting in the queue to rinse your feet and the people in front are taking forever, washing every single grain of sand off their feet, their flip-flops, bucket and spades, water bottles, small children! It takes ages, clean water trickling away, all day, every day.

This isn’t about the Cyprus Authorities cashing in on our need to be sand free, after all they only charge 2.5 euros for a sunbed. Ans some beaches, like Agia Triada have free water for refilling your water bottles. And some (like Fig Tree bay) have free solar chargers built into benches.

The reasons behind the charge are actually about maintenance, hygiene, and water conservation. Those public foot-wash stations need:

• Freshwater supply — Cyprus may be an island paradise, but it has serious water supply issues. Conserving water is essential.
• Cleaning and sanitising — keeping stations clean for everyone, someone is paid to do this.
• Drains and infrastructure maintenance — Cyprus drains are being replaced, but many still aren’t fully fit for purpose. Fun fact: you’re not even supposed to flush used toilet paper down the toilets in many parts of Cyprus, Eeeew.

That €1 contribution helps cover all this — keeping the Cyprus beaches safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone.

Is it worth paying the foot wash fee?

Honestly? Yes — if you want sand-free shoes, socks, or car floors. €1 is a tiny price to pay to avoid walking around like a glittery sand monster. Better be quick thouugh, one go is not going to do a whole families feet.

Cheapskate trick: If €1 is a stretch then you can bring a carrier bag and fill it with sea water before leaving the sand. You can rinse your feet yourself later — perfect for Fig Tree Bay, where the fee is card-only, no cash accepted.

1. Timing is everything – Stand behind someone who has small feet, maybe their splash will hit you.
2. DIY rinse – Carrier bag full of sea water trick works like a charm. And this is fun for the kids too, make it a game 😉
3. Embrace the sand – A little sand is part of the holiday fun, you’re not going to get it all off anyway and Cyprus is so hot that in a few minutes it will be dry enough to brush away.
4. Think about conservation – Not using the paid station helps Cyprus save precious water and avoid overloading old drains.
